Overview of Scholarships

Through its scholarship funds, the Southeast Alabama Community Foundation assists area students in attaining their academic goals by offsetting their postsecondary education expenses. Applications are available beginning December 1 with a deadline of March 1, with the exception of The Wayne Hawkins Memorial Scholarship which has a deadline of March 15.

Qualifying criteria varies broadly by program with the bulk of scholarship funds targeting graduating seniors. In an effort to make the process as efficient as possible, one application form can be completed to apply for multiple programs.

Review

Claim Your Scholarship Award

Please have the registrar’s office of the college or university contact us, providing written proof of your full-time enrollment (e.g., an enrollment verification letter.) Proof of enrollment can be sent:

Once we receive official confirmation of enrollment status, we will issue a check to the institution to be applied toward your expenses. Allow two weeks for the check to be delivered to your institution. Please keep in mind that the foundation is unable to issue any scholarship awards without written proof of enrollment.

Middle School Students

(Open to 7th or 8th grade students from Headland Middle School)

A $4,000 scholarship will be awarded to one boy and one girl from Headland Middle School who is currently in 7th or 8th grade and plans to attend an accredited two- or four-year college or university. GPA will be considered, but there is no minimum requirement. The scholarship award will be based on demonstrated student financial need.

Graduating Seniors

(Open to senior student-athletes from Slocomb High School)

The scholarship was created in memory of Jamey McAllister, a Fadette, Alabama native, who passed away on December 16, 2017. The fund has been established for the benefit of a Slocomb High School graduate who is planning to attend an accredited two- or four-year college or university. This student must have participated in a minimum of 2 AHSAA sponsored sports at Slocomb High School, while maintaining a minimum 2.5 GPA.  Applicants will submit an essay outlining their hopes and goals for their college plan and future career.

(Open to student-athletes who are student-athletes from Northview High School, from Dothan High School or from Houston Academy)

Established in loving memory of an outstanding athlete and senior at Northview High School who was tragically killed in an automobile accident in August 1999. Any graduating senior/athlete from Northview High School, Dothan High School or Houston Academy is eligible to apply. Awards are based on the student’s academic record, athletic accomplishments and character. Applicants must have: maintained a B average, participated in a sport at his/her high school and demonstrated good character through leadership roles and service to school and community.

(Open to graduating seniors from any public or private high school in the State of Alabama) 

Established in memory of the lives lost in the Haynes Life Flight 2 helicopter crash. This scholarship will annually provide a $2,000 scholarship to a student interested in pursuing a degree in Nursing and/or EMT/paramedic certification in the state of Alabama. Applicant must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.

(Open to graduating seniors from Wicksburg High School or from any Houston County high school including Dothan City Schools)

Two scholarships at $1,500 each will be awarded to (1) a graduate of Wicksburg High School in Newton, Alabama, and (2) a graduate of any public or private school within Houston County (including Dothan City Schools). Award will be based on academic achievement, school and community involvement.

(Open to graduating seniors from any Dothan High School)

Established in 2005 to honor Ronnie Mendheim’s legacy of helping youth. Any graduate of a Dothan high school is eligible. Scholarship awards will be based on the following criteria: (1) academic achievement and (2) school/community activities that demonstrate leadership abilities. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale and minimum ACT score of 21.

(Open to current or former residents of Alabama Sheriff’s Boys & Girls Youth Ranches or others similarly situated)

Assist with post-secondary education expenses for current or former residents of Alabama Sheriff’s Boys & Girls Youth Ranches or others similarly situated. Applicant must be sponsored by a staff person and must be under the age of 25.

(Open to graduating seniors from any public or private high school in the State of Alabama who is planning to attend the University of Alabama to study in the College of Communication and Information Sciences)

One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduate of any high school within the state of Alabama. Student must plan to attend The University of Alabama, studying in the College of Communication and Information Sciences. A focus on Sport Communication is preferred, but not required. A minimum 3.0 GPA and two reference letters are required.

Wayne Hawkins Memorial Scholarship

(Open to children of Alfa’s customer service representatives, district supervisors and agents)

Criteria for awarding scholarships are academic accomplishment and/or financial need. All applicants must be able to be claimed on their parents’ tax return to be eligible. High school seniors and those currently enrolled in college are eligible. The scholarship is awarded for one year’s time, so past recipients and those who were previously turned down should reapply each year. The review committee will review all applications and determine the number and amount of awards annually.
