Joseph Fanning Drake High School Endowment Scholarship
The Class of 1968 at Joseph Fanning Drake High School has spearheaded an endowment scholarship initiative to engage all twelve graduating classes (1959-1970), local communities, politicians, friends, associates, and former teachers and administrators. Our mission is to ensure that the legacy of the former Drake High School is forever enshrined in Alabama’s history of educational excellence.
During a time of separate and unequal schooling, Drake High School educated approximately 1,000 graduates. Despite numerous social challenges faced by African Americans, many Drake alumni have gone on to lead exceptional careers. Among them are dentists, business owners, lawyers and judges, an Army Colonel, accountants, medical nurses, high school and college teachers, Auburn, Alabama’s first African American police officer, mail carrier, and fireman, the sixth African American forester in the U.S., a European Army basketball star, and scientists.
Although Drake High School’s original structure is largely gone, the hardwood floor in the administration hallway, the band room, and our enduring legacy remain.
“Our legacy . . . Our Responsibility.” Please join our initiative!
