CACF Awards $142,781.00 in Shelter and Social Services Grants

MONTGOMERY, AL – The Central Alabama Community Foundation (CACF) awarded $142,781 in grants to 18 River Region nonprofits that support shelter and social services initiatives in Montgomery, Lowndes, Macon, Autauga and Elmore counties. The Shelter and Social Services Grants being awarded are part of the Cultural and Community Enhancement Grant Cycle that CACF manages. Funds from these grants will go directly toward assisting many within these communities. 

Listed below are the nonprofit organizations that received grants from CACF and its two affiliates, Autauga Area Community Foundation and Elmore County Community Foundation, at the December 7 grant ceremony. 

Central Alabama Community Foundation ($104,266.00) 

Shelter Grants ($51,500.00) 

$12,500.00 to Family Sunshine Center to provide 132 days of shelter services for 10 victims of interpersonal violence in Lowndes and Montgomery counties 

$15,000.00 to Friendship Mission to renovate two family rooms at the shelter serving women and children

$9,000.00 to House to House Community Development to provide a new roof for the restoration of a home in the neighborhood of Mobile Heights that will provide affordable housing for a mother who participates in the agency’s education and mentoring program and has eight family embers in her household 

$15,000.00 to Rebuilding Together Central Alabama to provide supplies for housing repairs for low-income Montgomery County homeowners with a focus on aging adults, people with disabilities, veterans, and families with children 

Social Services Grants ($52,766.00) 

$5,000.00 to Alabama Kidney Foundation to provide financial assistance to kidney patients in Lowndes, Macon and Montgomery counties through its Daily Living Needs Program and Transportation Assistance Program

$15,000.00 to American Legion Charles L. Martin Post 1948 to support the purchase of a van to transport veterans residing in the P.E.E.R.S. Shelter to group therapy sessions, job interviews and medical appointments 

$7,800.00 to Beacon Center at Metropolitan United Methodist Church to provide one half the cost of weekly meals for Next Steps, a six-month alternative sentencing program for veterans who develop personal leadership skills through the Awaken curriculum and are linked to social services to address systemic barriers 

$5,868.00 to Easter Seals Central Alabama to support the costs of the occupational therapist and supply costs in the hippotherapy program, where horses are used in occupational therapy with clients ages four to fourteen years diagnosed with autism and developmental delays 

$6,000.00 to Kid One Transport to support the fuel costs for providing transportation to healthcare services for children and expectant mothers in Lowndes, Macon, and Montgomery counties with a focus on travel to specialty care in Birmingham

$7,598.00 to Mental Health America, Montgomery to support the program assistant’s salary and the food costs for the Psychosocial Clubhouse that provides clients having a serious mental health diagnosis with a support system and social opportunities 

$5,500.00 to Specialized Alternatives for Families and Youth of Alabama, Inc. to purchase school uniforms, socks, shoes, and emergency toiletries to support the initial placement of a child in a foster care home 

Autauga Area Community Foundation ($12,000.00) 

Shelter Grants ($7,500.00) 

$2,500.00 to Family Sunshine Center to provide one Autauga County resident with 26 days of shelter services

$2,500.00 to Habitat for Humanity of Autauga and Chilton Counties to support costs of constructing new home in Autauga County

$2,500.00 to Rebuilding Together Central Alabama to support the costs of building two ramps in Autauga County homes 

Social Services Grants ($4,500.00) 

$2,000.00 to Alabama Kidney Foundation to provide financial assistance to kidney patients in Autauga County through its Daily Living Needs Program and Transportation Assistance Program 

$2,500.00 to Butterfly Bridge Children’s Advocacy Center to provide forensic interviews, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, and caregiver support sessions for two Autauga County children 

Elmore County Community Foundation ($14,900.00) 

Shelter Grants ($2,500.00)

$2,500.00 to Family Sunshine Center to provide one Elmore County resident with 26 days of shelter services 

Social Services Grants ($12,400.00) 

$2,500.00 to Butterfly Bridge Children’s Advocacy Center to provide forensic interviews, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, and caregiver support sessions for two Elmore County children 

$2,500.00 to Coosa RiverKeeper, Inc. to support the costs of monitoring the Coosa River’s water quality with a focus on identifying harmful algae blossoms

$2,500.00 to Elmore County Family Resource Center, Inc. to support the costs of program materials for the implementation of the Smart and Secure Children Parent Leadership Program with Hispanic families in Elmore County

$2,400.00 to Southeastern Diabetes Education Services to provide three children in Elmore County with full scholarships to attend Camp Seale Harris to learn how to manage their diabetes condition 

$2,500.00 to W.E.L.C.O.M.E., Inc. to purchase food for distribution to Elmore County families through its food pantry

CACF Technical Assistance Grants ($6,615.00) 

1,615.00 to American Legion Charles L. Martin Post 1948 to purchase three Apple iPads and the HubSpot App to automate the registration process at the P.E.E.R.S. Mobile Pantry/Food Drives and significantly reduce the wait time for clients 

$2,500.00 to Hope Inspired Ministries to provide direct mail marketing of postcards to areas matching the demographics of clients that HIM serves

$2,500.00 to Mental Health America in Montgomery to purchase two computers for use by the administrative staff 

Field of Interest Grants ($5,000.00)

CACF Mary L. & Eugene C. Vann Reading Fund Grant ($5,000.00)

$5,000.00 to Pintlala Elementary School to purchase science of reading kits and supporting manipulatives for use in five classrooms serving 85 students
