Representatives from the Central Alabama Community Foundation (CACF) made a series of surprise visits to two Lowndes County volunteer fire departments today, surprising local first responders with check presentations totaling $16,286 in grant funding.
The funding is part of a $1 million grant dedicated solely to supporting programs, organizations, and infrastructure that directly serve Lowndes County. Today’s surprise presentations equip local volunteer firefighters with modern rescue tools, protective turnout gear, and essential breathing apparatus, enhancing countywide emergency response capabilities.
“Volunteer fire departments are the backbone of emergency response in rural communities, and keeping our first responders equipped with modern, reliable gear is critical,” said Burton Crenshaw, President of the Central Alabama Community Foundation. “Surprising these dedicated men and women today was a privilege. They put their lives on the line for Lowndes County every day, and we are proud to drop by and deliver the support they deserve.”

Calhoun VFD — $10,860.00
Funding covers the purchase of three new Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) air packs to ensure firefighter safety during active calls.
Hicks Hill / Black Belt VFD — $5,426.00
Funding supports the acquisition of two complete sets of turnout gear suits, including jackets, pants, protective hoods, helmets, and gloves.

$141,286 in total funding has now been awarded across Lowndes County. Grant dollars remain available from Cloverleaf Infrastructure’s $1 million fund.
The CACF online grant portal is actively accepting applications for the Cloverleaf Project Red Clay Grant Fund. Funding is available exclusively for programs and initiatives operating directly in Lowndes County, Alabama. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) public charities, tax-exempt churches, governmental entities, and organizations with verifiable non-profit status.
